He and his crony, Levi, reminisce about events, people, feelings and standards of conduct in a closely knit Pennsylvania German Mennonite community in the Preston-Hespler district of Waterloo Township. The young lovers are orphans who each have been adopted by Mennonite families, the Martins and the Shoemakers.
