  • Publisher: [Kitchener, Ont.] : Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario, 1970.
  • General Note: "Although the young lovers in this historical novel are fictitious characters, Uncle Hannes is John Baer, a gifted Mennonite minister, a farmer and a builder. He and his crony, Levi, reminisce about events, people, feelings and standards of conduct in a closely knit Pennsylvania German Mennonite community in the Preston-Hespler district of Waterloo Township. The young lovers are orphans who each have been adopted by Mennonite families, the Martins and the Shoemakers. The discovery of who their real parents were and the involvement of the Mennonite community cuts close to the bone of reality in 19th century Mennonite society."Collection donated by the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society.
